On the other hand, I think there's probably something to be said for doing more traditional expansion packs if you're aiming for esports seasons. Though it's probably bad buisiness to announce you're selling for $40 bucks but plan to go F2P down the line, so I'd expect the same story even if they did have those plans. They haven't decided on what future updates will look like or how they'll monetize the additional content. It's $40 for the game, or $60 for the special edition. They've explicitly said (there was an interview on Kotaku a few days ago) that they are not going F2P in the near term.

Until it is possible, Free-To-Play games are not for me including Overwatch if it goes that way.

Maybe it isn't possible to create a Free-To-Play game that is free at one end and complete game AAA$$ at the other. I don't want to play the Hearthstone in-game currency acquisition game, I want to create a deck with access to all cards and then play that deck. I just want to buy a game and play the game. I only played Heroes long enough to get the Hearthstone cardback and was that quickly turned off by in-game currency acquisition and inflated real dollars cost. The Adventures are fixed amount of cards for fixed price but that fixed price is inflated to account for in-game gold. I think the estimate I see most often for Hearthstone is 150-200 packs to get a complete expansion set like GvG or TGT. The free-to-play model has sacrificed established "full-price". The problem that I have with Hearthstone and Heroes is that I can't spend established AAA money on the game and get the complete game for that money. I don't know, I will wait and see before I pre-order. Blizzard also said that having access to all the characters and swapping mid-match is encouraged and intended. The Origins edition could just be the equivalent to the Heroes of the Storm starter bundle. Now that I think about it, just because there is an Origins edition to pre-order that doesn't mean there won't be a free-to-play option even at release.

And that open beta weekend stress tests are possible. The rumors and hints I have heard are that the closed beta will continue to grow gradually. Since Overwatch has an upfront purchase price like Diablo and Starcraft and not like Hearthstone or Heroes of the Storm, I think it will be much closer to Starcraft and Diablo. If Overwatch releases at $60 and 6 months later they release a DLC pack with a mini-campaign, a new map or three and a few new heroes for $15 only (no in-game currency) I would be happy. If Overwatch releases at $60 and 6 months later new heroes are available for $20 or 2,500,000,000 CRUD each I will be surprised and very disappointed. Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm have to put the complete game out of normal purchase price reach and include in-game currency to subsidize free players.

DLC with significant content and full blown expansions for a price are fine too as long as there isn't an in-game currency grind to get it "free". I don't care if there is a shop for cosmetics and other crap. Costumes, special weapons, other perks will keep it solvent in the same way that LoL, DotA2, HotS, and TF2 do.Īnd yet Blizzard keeps Diablo and Starcraft solvent without F2P shenanigans. In a sense, they seem to be following the same route that Team Fortress 2 did - start with a purchase price, drop to F2P once interest starts to drop. I have little doubt that the preorder/launch deal is to draw funds from the people who will easily toss $60 at it (and note that I include myself in that group, even if I believe it's going to be F2P), and that it will either launch as F2P, or "convert" to F2P within 6 months. Their Launch pack sounds a great deal like the original League of Legends starter pack, with unlocked heroes, special skins, and a few other perks. If you're against F2P, I expect you're going to be disappointed with Overwatch. I can answer questions as well, just make sure to use "normal" terminology. If anyone else is in the beta and wants to be dragged down by a FPS newb, let me know, would love to try pre-made. I am moving away from Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm, Free-To-Play is not for me. I am liking Overwatch quite a bit and will likely pre-order. My prior FPS experience is Doom, Unreal and Tribes.

You can pre-order the Origins edition which includes skins and other goodies for $60. Overwatch is releasing Spring 2016 on PC(Win), Xbox One, Playstation 4. Thought I might give a couple of updates. I got into the beta a couple of days ago.
